Noctua NF-A8 FLX Review

Noctua has been one of the best, if not the best producer of PC fans for a a while now.  They have a reputation for making quiet but powerful fans.  I picked up their top of the line 80mm fan, NF-AB FLX. Check out my review in the video above, or read on for my quick impression.

Build Quality

The NF-A8-FLX features the same high quality build that the price tag suggests. This fan feels as solid in the hand, but isn’t heavy.  The cable is fully braided, and each of the 8 corners is covered by rubber vibration pads.

Features

Noctua packs quite a bit of tech into their fans.  The official features listed on their site are the following:

Flow Acceleration Channels

The NF-A8 impeller features suction side Flow Acceleration Channels. By speeding up the airflow at the crucial outer blade regions, this measure reduces suction side flow separation and thus leads to better efficiency and lower vortex noise.

Integrated Anti-Vibration Pads

Integrated Anti-Vibration Pads made from extra-soft silicone minimise the transmission of minute vibrations while maintaining full compatibility with all standard screws and other mounting systems.

SSO2 Bearing

The NF-A8 features the further optimised second generation of Noctua’s renowned, time-tested SSO bearing. With SSO2, the rear magnet is placed closer to the axis to provide even better stabilisation, precision and durability.

Smooth Commutation Drive 2

The latest version of Noctua’s advanced Smooth Commutation Drive system ensures superb running smoothness by eliminating torque variations and switching noises. This makes the NF-A8 remarkably quiet even at very close distances.

3 speed settings for full flexibility

Providing 2000, 1650 and 1200 rpm speed settings via the supplied Low-Noise and Ultra-Low-Noise Adapters, the NF-A8 FLX (Flexibility) can be fine-tuned for superior airflow or maximum quietness.

Extensive cabling options

The fan’s short 20cm primary cable minimises cable clutter in typical applications while the supplied 30cm extension provides extended reach when necessary. Both cables are fully sleeved.

6-year manufacturer’s warranty

Noctua fans are renowned for their impeccable quality and outstanding longevity. Like all Noctua fans, the NF-A8 features an MTBF of more than 150.000 hours rating and comes with a full 6-year manufacturer’s warranty.

Performance

The NF-A8-FLX performed admirably.  This fan is capable of moving quite a bit of air, at low volumes. For full test results check out the video review above.

Value

Value is the only area where Noctua fans can sometimes struggle.  At around $18 the A8 is rather expensive compared to other 80mm fans.  However it is important to keep in mind that you are getting top level performance, noise levels, and accessories.  For me the NF-A8 FLX was worth every penny.
